The South Carolina Arts Commission Board of Commissioners has approved the 2009-2010 Individual Artist Fellowship Award recipients. This year, the Arts Commission is presenting awards totaling $20,000 to four South Carolina artists—in the categories of visual art, craft, dance choreography and dance performance. Fellows each receive $5,000 in recognition of their superior artistic merit. There are alternates in all but one category.

The 2009-2010 fellows and alternates are:

Visual art: Damond L. Howard, Orangeburg County
Alternate: Jonathan D. Brilliant, Charleston County
Craft: Kim Lee Keats, Beaufort County
Alternate: Susan J. Grier, Pickens County
Dance choreography: Jill Eathorne Bahr, Charleston County
Alternate: No alternate was named in this category.
Dance performance:

Terrance Orlando Henderson, Richland County

  Alternate: Regina Willoughby, Lexington County

“Artists are a fundamental part of the South Carolina creative workforce,” said S.C. Arts Commission Acting Executive Director Ken May. "Fellowship grants enable them to create their work, advance their careers and to contribute to community life."

The board of the S.C. Arts Commission approves fellowships based on recommendations made by out-of-state review panelists, who select fellows and alternates based solely on their review of anonymous work samples. This year's dance panelists were Claire West of Pheonix, Ariz., Jennifer Tsukayama and Casey Blake, both of Tempe, Ariz. Visual arts panelists were Kimberly Dummons of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Susan Knowles and Lanie Gannon, both of Nashville, Tenn.

Individual artists working in poetry, prose, acting and playwriting can apply for the 2010-2011 fellowship awards. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1.

NOTE: All grant awards are contingent upon availability of funds, submission and approval of final reports, and compliance with program grant guidelines.
