E-News from the SC Arts Commission

8/10/2007

Hello everyone,

Despite the heat wave, fall is on the way.  Celebrate the change in seasons by joining colleagues at the Statewide Arts Conference Sept. 10 and 11 in Newberry.  The opening session features Donna Walker-Kuhne, nationally acclaimed audience development expert and author of Invitation to the Party. But don’t drive to Newberry until you’ve purchased the now-available Driven by the Arts license plate.  You don’t want your car to be the only one in the parking lot without a plate…

STATEWIDE ARTS CONFERENCE UPDATE
The Statewide Arts Conference, scheduled for Sept. 10 and 11 in Newberry, is designed around networking – the old-fashioned kind and the new-fangled kind.  Recognizing that sometimes the best conversations take place in the hall between sessions, we’ve designed “open space” opportunities for that tried-but-true networking method of talking with others interested in similar topics.  A session on new forms of connecting, Engaging Your Audience Through Online Technology, will focus on reaching supporters who use the Internet. You’ll learn to use low-cost, online resources such as blogs, podcasts, e-mail, YouTube, and MySpace to engage and build audiences.

The conference’s biggest social networking opportunity (the old-fashioned kind) is the evening event on Sept. 10, when the SC Arts Alliance will honor SC artist Dr. Leo Twiggs with the Scottie Award.

Check out Statewide Arts Conference for conference details, and be sure to register by Aug. 20.  And if you’ve already registered, check the schedule for the latest updates.

DRIVEN BY THE ARTS PLATE DEBUTS

The wait is over – the new Driven by the Arts license plate is now available at your local SC Dept. of Motor Vehicles office!  Plate numbers over 200 are available through the SC DMV for a $70 specialty plate fee, renewed every two years. Plate numbers between 51 and 200 are available only through the SC Arts Commission for a one-time donation of $100, plus the $70 fee. Click here to order a plate number between 51 and 200, or for details on ordering plates over 200 through the SC DMV. You may also visit your DMV office in person to purchase a plate. Proceeds benefit arts education programs in communities and schools across the state.

SC ARTISTS LINC

South Carolina has been selected as one of two states for the national initiative Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC). The SC Arts Commission has received support through LINC’s Creative Communities program to identify key concerns for SC artists and to develop practical strategies that address those issues. Most of the sites selected have been major cities with high concentrations of artists, such as Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. SC and Montana are the first sites selected for statewide initiatives.

A crucial part of the planning process is a convening of artists to discuss and identify key issues. The convening will take place from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the Olympia Learning Center, located at 621 Bluff Road in Columbia. Artists will have the opportunity to share their ideas with other artists and invited "listeners,” including arts and civic leaders, public officials and others. LINC representatives and artists from other LINC sites will attend as well. Registration is free, but space is limited. Pre-registration is required no later than August 20.

FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE OCT. 1
Individual artists working in prose, poetry, music performance or music composition are invited to apply for the next round of Individual A rtists Fellowships. ARTS EDUCATION BOOKING CONFERENCE SET FOR OCT. 22-23
