S.C. Arts Commission Announces Artist Fellows, S.C. Fiction Project Winners

COLUMBIA, S.C. –Demonstrating its efforts to support South Carolina artists, the S.C. Arts Commission announces the 2008-2009 Individual Artist Fellowship Award recipients and the 2008 S.C. Fiction Project winners.
Six artist fellows receive $5,000 each in recognition of their superior artistic merit. Twelve Fiction Project winners receive $500 each for first publication rights of their stories, which The Post and Courier will publish in a special insert on Sept. 21.
The 2008-2009 fellows and alternates are:
Prose: Julia E. Elliott, Lexington County and Mindy Friddle, Greenville County
Alternates: Jonathan Sanchez, Charleston County, and Stephanie Young, Greenville County
Poetry: Dan Albergotti, Horry County and Sally Arango Renata, Horry County
Alternates: Donald Ray McManus Jr., Richland County, and Meta Marie Griffin, Spartanburg County
Music Performance: Phillip Bush, Richland County
Alternate: Fabio Parrini, Greenville County
Music Composition: John Fitz Rogers, Lexington County
Alternate: Jay Knowles, Richland County
The S.C. Arts Commission Board approves fellowships based on recommendations made by out-of-state review panelists, who select fellows and alternates based solely on their review of work samples. This year’s panelists were Chris Arrell, Atlanta, Ga.; Cornelius Eady, Notre Dame, Ind.; Jason Freeman, Atlanta, Ga.; and Mako Yoshikawa, Newton, Mass.
Individual artists working in visual arts, crafts, dance performance or dance choreography can apply for the 2009-2010 Individual Artist Fellowship Awards. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1. Novelists Randall Kenan of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Pamela Duncan of Saxapahaw, N.C., evaluated Fiction Project entries based on their literary quality and suitability for a general newspaper audience. Biographies and comments from judges are available.
The S.C. Fiction Project is open to South Carolina residents of at least 18 years of age. Writers interested in participating in the 2009 contest should submit previously unpublished short stories of 2,500 words or less by Jan. 15, 2009.
