S.C. Arts Commission Announces 2009 S.C. Fiction Project Winners

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina Arts Commission announces the winners of the 2009 South Carolina Fiction Project, a contest of previously unpublished short stories sponsored in partnership with The Post and Courier, which provides each honoree $500 for first publication rights. The newspaper is publishing one story each Sunday for 12 weeks, beginning July 5.
This year's winners are (stories will be printed in this order):

Camille Collins, Florence
Dell Isham, Columbia
Robert Lamb, Columbia
Rachel Luria, Columbia
Edward Markiewicz, Seneca
Sara Peters, Columbia
Melanie Richardson, North Charleston
Dave Sennema, Columbia
Novelists Gwyn McGee and Ronald M. Gauthier, both of Atlanta, evaluated entries based on their literary quality and suitability for a general newspaper audience. Biographies for honorees and judges are posted.
The S.C. Fiction Project was created in 1992 to showcase some of South Carolina's best writers. Many previous winners have since been published widely, including Sue Monk Kidd, whose "Secret Life of Bees" was made into a feature film, and Brian Ray, whose novel, "Through the Pale Door," won the inaugural S.C. First Novel Prize and has just been published by the Hub City Writers Project in Spartanburg.
