COLUMBIA, S.C. – Artists working in poetry, prose, acting and playwriting may apply for a 2010-2011 Individual Artist Fellowship Award from the S.C. Arts Commission. Up to four fellowships of $5,000 will be awarded. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1. Applications and guidelines are now posted.
The Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Fellowship Program encourages the pursuit of artistic excellence and provides financial support to South Carolina artists of merit. Past fellows agree that fellowship awards help promote public awareness and appreciation for the role of the artist in South Carolina.
Dan Albergotti, a 2008-2009 poetry fellow from Conway, said, “The artist fellowship has been an honor and a blessing. Its value to my work in terms of time, resources and encouragement is immeasurable.”
Since 1976, the Arts Commission has awarded 196 fellowship awards to actors, craftsmen, poets, screenwriters, musicians and more in recognition of exemplary artistic talent. Fellowship awards have no restriction on use of funds.
"The fellowship has boosted my career,” said Mindy Friddle, a 2008-2009 prose fellow from Greenville. “Money, after all, is creative time, and polished pages, and the award allowed me to undertake longer work and to write with confidence.”
The Individual Artist Fellowship Program is one of the agency’s most competitive grant programs. Fellows and alternates are recommended by out-of-state review panelists, who make selections based solely on a review of work samples. These recommendations are approved by the Arts Commission Board. For more information, visit the Individual Artist Fellowship Program page or call (803) 734-8696.
