Statewide Arts Conference:
Celebrating Our Past and Connecting Our Future!
The “Scottie” is presented by the S.C. Arts Alliance to an individual who, in the opinion of the Alliance’s executive committee, has played a significant role in the growth and development of the arts in S.C. and beyond.
The award, a bronze sculpture created by Philip Whitley of Greenville, is named after Scott Shanklin-Peterson, who served as executive director of the S.C. Arts Commission for 13 years. Under her leadership, the Arts Commission received national recognition for leadership in arts education, including such notable accomplishments as the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project (ABC), rural arts development and media arts. Ms. Shanklin-Peterson served as senior deputy director of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1994 to 2001, and is currently the director of the Arts Management Program at the College of Charleston.
Among the criteria taken into consideration for a Scottie are:
- Contributions to a climate that encourages support of, and advocacy for, both public and private funding of the arts
- Lifelong contributions to the arts and arts education
