Brenda P. McCutchen

2017 Arts in Education Award

Brenda McCutchenBrenda McCutchen has worked as dance educator in schools and universities, served as an innovative arts administrator, established herself as a leading author on dance education and created her own company to disseminate her original pedagogical materials. Her comprehensive textbook, Teaching Dance as Art in Education, is considered the foundation text for K-12 teacher preparation and certification in the US and abroad. McCutchen wrote the curriculum for the first B.A. in dance education in S.C. and directed its implementation at Columbia College. This first dance certification degree program was followed by USC’s dance education curriculum, also written and implemented by McCutchen. In addition, she helped to establish the SC Center for Dance Education, a center that was helpful in redefining dance taught as a holistic art form in education as different from the physical education model of skills-based activities. She has been a leader in the National Dance Education Organization, has presented her work internationally and is sought after as a workshop facilitator. McCutchen has been a member of the ABC Steering Committee since its inception and has worked closely the Arts Commission, the Dept. of Education and the ABC Project to advocate for arts education funding and train teaching artists.
