The Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards

The Stringer & Rainey Foundations

2017 Business/Foundation Award

Stringer Foundation. Anderson, South CarolinaCallie and John Rainey Foundation. Anderson, South Carolina

The significant philanthropic commitment of The Stringer and Rainey Foundations dates back 70 years, when The Stringer Foundation was founded in 1947 by William Kenneth Stringer and Nancy Freeman Stringer, parents of Caroline (Callie) Stringer Rainey. In 1993, The Callie and John Rainey Foundation was established, and together, these family-related foundations have contributed generously to ensure the vitality of the arts across South Carolina. The scope of their investments, which include enhancing arts centers and museums in Anderson, Columbia, Pawleys Island and Spartanburg, providing programmatic support for the ETV Endowment, and offering scholarships to educational institutions to nurture the next generation of artists, have safeguarded and energized the state’s cultural history and creative environment. Trustees Mary Rainey Belser, Nancy Rainey Crowley, Robert McElwee Rainey and the late John Stringer Rainey have continued that commitment of time and money to enhance the arts, benefiting a long list of organizations and projects, including Anderson Arts Center, Anderson University, Arts Partnership of Spartanburg, Brookgreen Gardens, Columbia Museum of Art, Converse College, S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, State Museum, and the S.C. Philharmonic. In addition, each family member has taken leadership roles in enabling organizations to grow, educating the public and making arts and culture accessible to everyone.
